The Hearst Classroom

English Language Arts/Literacy

The key components of English Language Arts instruction at Hearst include:

  • Phonemic Awareness/Phonics/Morphology
  • Reading, Research, and Writing
  • Small Group Instruction, including independent reading in just right books, comprehension, independent reading, and small group work stations
  • Students in K-5 will have access to an online program called iReady ELA to support and develop their reading skills. We make time for students to use these programs during small group work stations and strongly encourage home use of these programs as well.

Mathematics

  • DCPS has adopted a math curriculum for students in grades K-5 called Eureka math. In addition to using Eureka, we will supplement teacher-led instruction with an online program, called iReady.  We make time for students to use the iReady Math program during small group work stations and strongly encourage home use of these programs as well. For more information about Eureka or iReady Math, please see your child’s teacher. Students in K-5 will have access to an online program called iReady ELA to support and develop their reading skills. Science and Social Studies

  • Social studies instruction is based on the DC Standards, while science instruction is based on the Next Generation Science Standards. Our staff is encouraged to design and deliver authentic, project-based social studies and science instruction and has tools to support them, STEMScopes, DCPS Cornerstone Projects, Project Lead the Way resources, and Discovery Education Techbook. Teachers deliver hands-on science lessons and integrate technology and research opportunities for students across the grades. Additionally, teachers are encouraged to use field trips and other extended learning opportunities to enrich and extend science and social studies learning.

The Responsive Classroom

The Responsive Classroom approach is practiced in all grades at Hearst Elementary. The Responsive Classroom is an approach to teaching and learning that fosters safe, challenging, and joyful classrooms and schools. Developed by classroom teachers, it consists of practical strategies for bringing together social and academic learning throughout the school day.

Responsive Classroom is a research- and evidence-based approach to elementary education that leads to greater teacher effectiveness, higher student achievement, and improved school climate.
